Coming-of-age story by Gabrielle Zevin
Gabrielle Zevin’s Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow was one of my favorite reads from 2023. The storytelling and character development of the protagonists, Sam and Sadie, were brilliant. After starting the year reading books like 21st Century Monetary Policy, it was refreshing to pick a novel and dive into some fiction.
This coming-of-age story came to me highly recommended by friends, colleagues, and digital mentors including Morgan, Heather, Sarina, Joshua, and even Bill Gates. While reading my physical copy, I captured some lines from the book that stood out to me and might resonate with you too.
She’s my best friend
It’s more than romantic. It’s better than romance. It’s friendship.
(1) all things were knowable by anyone
(2) anything was fixable if you took the time to figure out what was broken
It was never worth worrying about someone you didn’t love. And it wasn’t love if you didn’t worry.
Every person you knew, every person you loved even, did not have to consume you for the time to have been worthwhile.
It isn’t a sadness, but a joy, that we don’t do the same things for the length of our lives.
Computers are great for experimentation, but they’re bad for deep thinking.
The most successful people are also the most able to change their mindsets.
Do you leave the formation of memories to happenstance, or do you decide to remember?
The way to turn an ex-lover into a friend is to never stop loving them, to know that when one phase of a relationship ends it can transform into something else. It is to acknowledge that love is both a constant and a variable at the same time.
And what is love in the end? Except the irrational desire to put evolutionary competitiveness aside in order to ease someone else’s journey of life?
The human brain makes an AI version of your loved ones. The brain collects data, and within your brain, you host a virtual version of that person.
True collaborators in this life are rare.
